Why buy local?
Canadians are increasingly interested in
buying local food. Whether it’s for freshness, taste
or environmental sustainability, consumers are looking for
food grown closer to home. Today’s global food system
is on the edge of a significant shift towards a more localized
food economy. Ontario currently imports more food than it
exports, which means that local food initiatives have room
to expand.
Sunrise Potato Storage Ltd.
sells farm-fresh potatoes directly to the consumer. Buying
food locally benefits not only your health but the health
of the environment and the local economy too. There are no
regulations yet, however, that govern the use of the word
“local.” Check to see whether the package indicates
where a product has been grown or processed.
In Ontario, potatoes are one of the few
vegetables that can be purchased fresh year-round. Sunrise’s
storage facilities ensure that you can eat something fresh
and local, even in the winter.
