New
life from flowers
Potato breeding involves the mechanics of taking pollen from
one flower (variety) and fertilizing the stigma of another
flower (variety). A successful pollination will produce 200-300
seeds in a “cherry-tomato”-like berry. Those seeds
are sown in pots. Each small tuber that grows is a potential
new potato variety. The wonders of what flowers can do!
