Seed Potato Sprouts

20130403-113838Seed tubers generally show apical dominance at sprout initiation (left). The goal at Spring planting is to have every eye on a tuber produce a sprout (middle). How is this accomplished? Apical dominance can be broken by breaking off the apical sprout or by cutting off the apical end of the tuber (right).

With physiologically young seed, breaking the apical sprout off or simply cutting the seed tuber well in advance of planting will result in all eyes producing sprouts. Each sprout grows into an above ground stem which will produce at least 3 tubers.
